Helen, Dylan and the horses at the stables

When Helen asked me to take some family photos of her, with her son, Dylan and the horses I was delighted. I have previously done some Equine photography and I love this subject. I was especially pleased when Helen asked if I could capture the horses running around and exercising, it was a challenge but I think we were able to get some good results.

This portrait shoot/mini horse shoot was fast paced as the horses needed their regular exercise and grooming all while getting the photos done. When I arrived Helen had picked out some locations around the stables that she thought may work for the backdrop, however, I was more interested in the stables themselves as there was some amazing light pouring through the windows and the door. So she and Dylan kindly humoured me and had their photos taken inside the stables where the best light was.

The horses enjoyed the show and seemed to be quite interested in our make shift studio, Dylan kept being attacked by one of the stallions and in the end gave and hugged him, which allowed for some nice portraits.

Out in the exercise yard, I put my faith in Helen to make sure that the I was not trampled on by the horses as they came galloping past me. To get a good angle, I was lying on the floor but insisted on using a longer lenses to give me time to move should they get too close. The horses behaved really well and didn’t get to close, leaving me the work of capturing them in action.

This portrait shoot was out of the norm for me, however, I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed working with both kids and animals on this occasion and I would happily do more portrait shoots with horses, if they are all this well trained.
